How should we consider Martin’s Act today? In this episode, we offer some suggestions. We unpack the UK’s Scrap Factory Farm judicial review and explore the legacy of Martin’s Act in China, Africa, Europe, India, and North America. We invite our historians to examine why history—and the history of the Act—is valuable: for animal activists, for cultural and political historians, and for legal scholars. We examine how broadly the vision of the Humanity Dick and Lord Erskine is found in the 2022 UK’s (Animal Welfare) Sentience Act, and other efforts to establish animal welfare across species, and continents.
